The predecessor of the Department of Chinese language and literature of Peking University is the Chinese literature gate of Beijing Normal University. At the beginning of the founding of Beijing University in 1898, there were "Literature" subjects, but no departments as an independent organizational form. In 1910, the branch University was officially opened, and the Chinese literature school was established. In 1919, it was renamed the Department of Chinese language and literature, which includes three subjects: language and writing, literature, and sorting out the national heritage. In 1937, because of the outbreak of the Anti Japanese War, the University moved southward and was incorporated into the National Southwest United University. After the victory of the Anti Japanese War, it returned to the north in 1946 and restored the establishment of the Department of Chinese culture of Peking University.
